Transform healthcare through humanity-centered design and service innovation.

During my two years at C4H as the Project Manager/Lead Design Researcher, I spearheaded a community initiative to advance healthcare technology equity & innovation. Through collaborating with community, industry, and academia, we apply design thinking in building meaningful, impactful, and resilient experiences.

Resilient Health Design: Co-develop community resilience through holistic service design

While serving as the TA for this class with Prof. Eliah Aronoff-Spencer, I co-designed syllabus, prepared hands-on activities, and provided feedback/critique for students’ work.

In the techquity project where we probe diabetics’ interaction with their healthcare providers, we gathered qualitative data from interviews. To make the best use of our data, I organized a workshop for student researchers to practice hands-on thematic analysis.

From interviewing 4 T1 diabetics and 4 healthcare providers, we identified people’s barriers in diabetes management and treatment. We are currently developing a personalized decision-aid checklist for hospital appointments.

Initial reaction during diagnosis

“Why me?”: isolating and stressful experience

Personal barriers

-> financial costs of medical devices

-> tolls on mental health

-> social/cultural stereotypes lead to biased treatment

What’s techquity?

-> meet people at their level

-> equal access to resources people need

-> not being called patients

-> no financial burden

MedTech Horizons: Reimagine FDA Approval Process

MedTech Horizons: Reimagine FDA Approval Process

Through designing and facilitating a participatory design workshop for medical device innovators, we hope to understand their experience on FDA approval process to ideate solutions to these challenges.

Transparency & Clarity

-> missing & unfocused information

-> non-existent wording standards

-> guidelines are overwhelming to navigate

-> inconsistent & untrustworthy resources

Support

-> FDA guidance enters too late

-> lack of consistent human support

-> trustworthy consultants are hard to access

-> Punishment fuels fear of seeking support

Time & Cost

-> Redundancy in application

-> Penalties for mistakes

-> Consultants are pricey

-> Unclear process

UX Trend

-> different character system

-> less typing, more browsing

-> able to accept high information density

-> simple UI != practical & trustworthy

Perception on diabetes tech

-> Reading only glucose data is “meaningless” because HCP don’t know what impacted the blood glucose.

-> CGMs used to be provided in hospital because PWDs’ daily diets are controlled by HCPs and they can track.

Diabetes Management

-> Presence of diabetes “influencers”

-> Seniors primarily get their info from HCPs

-> People are unaware that some cultural eating habits would increase their glucose

✨My reflections

✨My reflections

Since stepping into the world of design, I've found this space where developed my research skills and more importantly, clarified the meaning of my work. Through empathy, we build a stronger connection between humans and technology to enhance personal health management. My perception of healthcare also extends beyond individual level to societal service.
